Ask a big box associate what size water heater to buy and the answer usually comes back in gallons: 40, 50, 75. That number describes how much water the tank holds when full, and it is close to the least useful figure on the spec sheet for predicting whether the last person to shower gets hot water or cold. What does a worked example look like?
