When is a magnesium anode rod the right choice?
Magnesium is the right choice on neutral to hard well or municipal water with no history of a sulfur or rotten egg smell, because it gives the strongest sacrificial protection of the two common materials and it is what most tanks ship with from the factory. If a tank has never had a smell problem, there is no reason to switch it away from magnesium just to switch it.
It is the wrong choice on water that has already produced a rotten egg smell, or on softened water, since softening is specifically aggressive to magnesium and will burn through the rod faster than the replacement interval assumes. Chasing a smell with another magnesium rod when the last one produced the same smell is a common and avoidable repeat mistake.
When is an aluminum zinc anode rod the right choice?
Aluminum zinc is the right choice whenever the hot water has developed a rotten egg smell, because the zinc content works against the sulfate reducing bacteria that cause it, which magnesium does nothing to stop and can even encourage. It is also a reasonable default on water that is known to be aggressive toward magnesium, since it is consumed more slowly under the same conditions.
It is the weaker choice on water where corrosion protection is the priority and smell has never been an issue, since it trades a little raw protection for the longer service life and the odor suppression.
