A second, unrelated mistake worth ruling out at the same time: a hammer arrestor is not an expansion tank. A hammer arrestor is a small shock-absorbing fitting that quiets the bang of a fast-closing solenoid valve on a washing machine or dishwasher. It does not have the air-charged volume to absorb the thermal expansion of an entire tank of water, and installing one in place of an expansion tank leaves the closed-system pressure problem completely unsolved.

Why does the pre-charge pressure matter before installation?
